Drugs - Dangerous Road Ahead! - April 14, 2023

Drugs - Dangerous Road Ahead!

The meteoric rise in marijuana use in America over the last 50 years has directly led to the legalization craze currently sweeping America. It will not end well.

As legal drugs are researched and manufactured for the good of both America and mankind, the misuse and illegal sale of hallucinogens, opioids and narcotics will exacerbate and multiply our social problems. I grew up in the 1960’s when the music of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin glorified the use of the drugs that killed them both.

Drugs are highly addictive. America first learned this lesson during and after the Civil War when so many Union and Confederate soldiers who had been wounded came home addicted to morphine to manage their pain. Three generations later the Roaring Twenties glorified the use of cocaine and marijuana.

Although many wonderful songs were written about them, the ugly fact is America was rapidly developing a serious drug problem. Today, on the highways in Ohio where I now have my great grandfather’s farmhouse, the signs that read “Report Impaired Driving” clearly tell me “Houston, we have a problem.”

The opioid epidemic now sweeping the Midwest is worse than manufacturers could ever have imagined. Sadly, many of those same manufacturers, together with complicit doctors, continue to feed the problem with impunity.

The hippies of the 60’s would be proud of the changes they have inspired. I am not proud of them.

While a relatively small percentage of those who smoke marijuana go on to harder drugs, the sad fact is that ALMOST ALL hard drug users start with marijuana.

“Defund the Police” was madness. Marijuana legalization is equally demented and must also stop.

If America were allowed to require random drug tests of everyone, the public will suddenly learn just how pervasive drug use is throughout our country. Vast numbers of doctors, lawyers, judges, emergency response personnel, together with rural farm laborers and board room businessmen from Wall Street, would be exposed as regular drug users.

We are in the middle of an epidemic even more formidable than Covid19. I firmly believe drug addiction rivals obesity as the number one problem in America today.
